GIE projection: Duke by roughly two · preliminary ratings have them nearly level, Duke 44th, Tulane 45th.
Opening weekend is built for mismatches. Blue-bloods schedule tune-ups, the rankings get their first workout against overmatched visitors, and most of the marquee is decided by halftime. So when a season starts with two teams the model can't separate, it's worth stopping on.
Tulane at Duke is that game. Our Way Too Early ratings put these two back-to-back in the mid-40s nationally — close enough that home field is most of the projected margin. This is a coin flip dressed up as a Week 1 afterthought.
It's a sleeper because neither program trades on its name. Tulane has spent the last few seasons turning the American into a launching pad, reloading through the portal and staying good while its rosters turn over. Duke has quietly become a hard out in the ACC, the kind of team that doesn't beat itself. Put two disciplined, well-built rosters on the same field in early September and you get the opposite of a blowout — you get a game that tells you something real about both.
One subplot in a two-point game: our roster data has Duke's lines growing to about 286 pounds a man, up roughly four year over year, while Tulane's have trimmed to about 287 — nearly identical in size now, but heading in opposite directions.
The model likes it precisely because the marquee doesn't. There's no top-ten brand here to pull the national cameras, which is the whole point of this series: the best game of a given Saturday is often the one nobody put on the graphic. Start your season here.
